Legendary director Mike Nichols died this week. Nichols was a master at creating scenes and he once said that there are three kinds of scenes: Fights, Negotiations and Seductions, and when in doubt, write a seduction.
I'm not so sure how this applies to my own writing, but it definitely got me thinking quite a bit about writing scenes and about keeping characters actively engaged with one another in order to keep your reader (or viewer) continually invested in the action of your story. I actually went back and looked at several scenes in a current project to see how they fit in to what Nichols said and my verdict was that I was definitely lacking in seduction. As I go forward I'm going to be more mindful of creating fights, negotiations and seductions in my writing.
RIP Mike Nichols and thank you for your amazing contributions to storytelling.
